Program – Beethoven, Tchaikovsky

Sir Isaiah Berlin was one of the great intellectuals of modern times, and
the most internationally famous Latvian of the 20th century.

June 6th 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of Berlin's birth in Riga, Latvia.

The centenary offers the occasion for a week of events in Riga examining and celebrating Berlin's life and work, paying particular attention to his
political thought, his Jewish identity, his Russian-Jewish cultural
heritage, and his early family life in the Riga of 1909-15.

Dr Vaira Vîíe-Freiberga, President of Latvia from 1999 to 2007, has kindly agreed to serve as patron of the centenary.

Evgeny has received generous praise in the international press: ”brilliant technique to pursue keyboard poetry”(The Independent),  “a gifted poet possessing wonderful inspiration and experience of the soul “ (Literature and Art Magazine), “an independent and profoundly individual way of thinking …extraordinarily capacious imagination... emotionally rich and unique individuality” (The Voice of Riga), “Samoyloff successfully marries crisp articularion, structure and flights of fancy” (International Record Review Magazine), “technically most assured” (Classical Source). He was acclaimed in the press in Riga as  “a lion of the keyboard”.
Evgeny has made numerous recordings for radio and television in UK (for the BBC Radio 3) Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. In particular, his live performance of Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto with the Lithuanian National Symphony won the Best Recording of the Year Award in the Nordic-Baltic Joint Concert Season and has been broadcast in all the Baltic and Scandinavian countries.

Recently Evgeny’s playing has been broadcast by BBC’s Radio 3, which also recorded his recital with Maxim Rysanov at the 2008 City of London Festival.

The Wigmore Hall has reminded us that the golden age of Soviet pianism is not dead: Evgeny Samoyloff employs a brilliant technique to pursue keyboard poetry.

…Each piece emerged with its individual character writ large, as though Samoyloff was possessed by Beethoven.

…His delivery of Pletnev's arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker was magical.
